They're VERY exciting performances, most of them live. The Fifth really stands out, in my view. It's on the fast side, but structurally sound. The Leipzig RSO may offend some who dislike the old Eastern European brass sound (I am actually fond of this), but the playing is generally good, with the occasional flubs you'd expect from live performances. Note that there are two performances each of symphonies 4, 7 and 9 (the additional 4 and 9 being mono recordings, everything else is in stereo). Another thing to notice is that the recording of the 8th symphony previously released on Pilz (a studio recording from what I can tell, as there is no audience noise) is a different recording from what's released in the box, which is a live recording with noticeable, but not too intrusive, audience noise. Fortunately they are sufficiently different to allow listeners a choice. The later recording is more dramatic and urgent, while the first recording is more expansive and searching. IMO and all that ... Ramon Khalona ==========
